I use word problems daily during Guided Math. This would be the “Story Problem” rotation. You can grab my Guided Math Rotation Board here:
My word problems are almost always correlated with the standard being taught at the time. This allows for the students to apply their learning to a higher level activity. For example, when doing a unit on two digit addition, the word problems will also be on two digit addition.
Each student has a math journal. Students will glue these pre-cut word problems into their math journals and will either draw or glue in the word problem 4 square(picture below)
I usually have students work on word problems with a partner or in a group of 3. This gives them a chance to talk about their math and gain ideas on different ways/strategies of attacking the word problem.
I have also used these word problems as part of my small group (Meet with the Teacher rotation) during Guided Math.
These word problems can also be used in a whole group setting, as a daily math warm-up, or with parent volunteers.
Be on the look out for my other word problem packs that cover second grade math!
Happy Teaching!
