When January comes around, I’m always looking for engaging Martin Luther King, Jr. activities! I love teaching in January and February because it’s such an important time to teach our students about so many African Americans who endured hardships and fought for what is RIGHT for so many years.
So..I kick off January with engaging math centers that integrate CONTENT…including facts about one of the most influential civil rights leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King and other interesting “January” related facts. I use these 2nd and 3rd Grade ‘Unlock the Fact’ math centers.
Then…the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day OR the Tuesday after, I like to CELEBRATE Martin Luther King with different activities!
First I like to read this book.
Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Another one of my favorite activities is Scrambled Sentences {a building sentences activity}. It’s such an engaging and fun activity for the students and provides them with the opportunity to build sentences by putting the words and punctuation in the correct order.
Students need so many opportunities for practicing sentence structure. This is still a concept that even students in the older grades struggle with, so various types of consistent exposure and practice is important.
